ICA Event - Tokyo’s Global Position as a FinTech Hub: Expectations vs Reality
ISG "Trusted Partners" Speaking Series
Monday, 1 October 2018 / 19:00
Maurizio Raffone
Co-Founder and CEO of Finetiq Limited

Financial Technology ("FinTech") is a booming market globally and Tokyo, as Japan's financial and technology center, is well placed to take advantage of it.

FinTech in Japan has been dominated by cryptocurrencies, partly due to supportive regulations, corporate venture capital and an appetite for new investment avenues and technology. Furthermore, Japan is in dire need to modernize an antiquated financial system. However, the overall business environment in Japan has not caught up with the realities of the 2.0 economy and start-ups, particularly foreign ones, can face steep hurdles in their quest to develop their business.

In this presentation our speaker will provide an overview of FinTech eco-system developments' best practices and success stories from around the globe and compare them to the current state of affairs in Tokyo and Japan in general.

Our speaker will look at: the regulatory framework, business costs, venture capital and financial support, incubators and accelerator programs and how those factors compare to some other major FinTech hubs. Furthermore, there will be some case studies to allow for an analysis and discussion of what works and what needs to be improved in Tokyo and Japan in general.
